What “Credit balance is too low” means in Claude Code

Diagnose Claude Code's “Credit balance is too low” error by checking the active authentication method, billing account, workspace, and refreshed credentials.

Short answer

“Credit balance is too low” is a billing or entitlement failure for the credential Claude Code actually used. Run claude auth status, identify whether the session uses an Anthropic login, API key, or managed provider, and inspect that account's balance or spend controls. Re-authenticate only after fixing the underlying account.

What the message means

Claude Code can run through different credential paths. A paid Claude subscription, an Anthropic API account, Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and an enterprise gateway do not share one balance. Seeing an active subscription in one place does not prove the credential selected by this shell can pay for the request.

Fix it in this order

1. Identify the active login

Ask Claude Code for its authentication status before changing anything. Also check whether your shell or managed settings select an API key or third-party provider, because that can take precedence over the account you expected.

2. Inspect the matching billing surface

For an Anthropic API key, check the organization that owns that key, its credit balance, and spend limit. For a managed provider, check that provider's billing and model access. For an employer workspace, ask the administrator who controls the shared budget.

3. Refresh stale authentication

After the balance, plan, or workspace assignment is corrected, sign out and in so Claude Code receives current credentials. Do not repeatedly log in when the balance itself is still empty.

Important distinctions

  • This message is different from a five-hour or weekly Claude usage limit; the site’s dedicated usage-limit guide covers those reset windows.
  • Never paste API keys, OAuth tokens, or billing screenshots containing secrets into a support request.
  • If a plan changed recently, a fresh login can update entitlement state, but it cannot add funds to an API organization.

Where Crowsnest fits

Crowsnest keeps provider accounts separate and shows which account a new native conversation will use. It cannot add Anthropic credits or override the billing and spend controls attached to that credential.
